February 2010 Poker Tournament Report

Wednesday, March 3, 2010 , Posted by The Golf Club at Somersett at 10:00 PM

A pair of aces is arguably the best hand to be...The February 2010 Somersett Country Club Poker Tournament was held on Saturday, February 20, 2010.   With snow falling that day, 19 stalward souls still managed to show up at the 19th hole to play some Texas Hold'em. Tensions were running high and before play even started, A.J. Schwerin filed a protest regarding the new rule requiring players to be conscious to finish in the money. Fortunately, the protest ended peacefully when someone brilliantly bought AJ a cocktail.
The poker action was fast and furious, highlighted by a simultaneous bad beat and biggest moron prize on the same hand! Greg Peek's quad Aces topping a Jacks over Aces Full House. Greg, employing a rarely used alternative trapping strategy where the trap doesn't ever get triggered, decided not to go all in against the aggressively betting Boat owner.  In golf terms, it would be the equivalent of Rickie Fowler deciding to lay up from 231 out on the par 5 15th hole of the Phoenix Open.  Someone please ask Greg what he was thinking.

Those knocked out of the main event found poker action at the "kiddie table" with high chip status going to Bob Rowland.  The participants agreed to award the Biggest Loser trophy  to Rick Greene. In both tournament and kiddie play Rick took two hands and split one pot. His play was judged to be limp.

Play wrapped up just short of midnight, with the final tournament results:

1. Ron Grason - (Scotty Cameron putter was part of the prize).
2. Dave DeValk
3. Greg Peters

A great time was had by all.  Thanks to all participants and look for the next 2010 Tournament date.
